1 CORINTHIANS 13:5

Love Keeps No Record of Wrongs
(1 Corinthians 13:5)
by Ted Schroder

Love keeps no record of wrongs (NIV). Love is not resentful (RSV). Love holds no grudges (LB). The verb Paul uses here means ‘to calculate.’ William Barclay says that the word “is an accountant’s word. It is the word that is used for entering up an item in a ledger so that it will not be forgotten.” Lewis Smedes writes that “Resentment is our memory of the painful, angry past.”

Grudges can divide families and friends. “Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, ‘Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.’” (Luke 12:13) His brother may have been executor of the estate, and he was asking Jesus for a decision in his own favor, to intervene in the family dispute. Jesus will have nothing to do with it. “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” He came to bring men to God not to bring property to men. He goes on to warn the crowd about the dangers of greed. In the parable of the Rich Fool he teaches that we can’t take our possessions with us, and that we will be held accountable for our stewardship of what we have been given.

Inheritance can foster much resentment between family members. But love can prevent and heal resentment. Nowhere is this truth better expounded than in the Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32). The younger son asked his father to give him his share of the estate. So the father divided his property between his sons. The younger son squandered his wealth in wild living. When he came to the end of his resources he decided to return home and beg his father’s forgiveness, and ask for a job as one of his employees. He did not ask to be reinstated as a son or to be given any preferential treatment. His father, however, had kept no account of his son’s wrongs. All he wanted was his son back safe and sound. Perhaps one of the most poignant descriptions in Scripture is that of the father watching out for the son. “While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.”

Love covers a multitude of sins. Love keeps no records of wrongs. Love is not resentful. Love holds no grudges. It was more important to the father that his beloved son had returned home safely than that his money was safe. He valued his relationship of love with his son more than his wealth. He was not going to let his son’s foolishness get in the way of his love.

For the older son it was much more difficult. He kept a record of wrongs. He resented his brother’s return, and acceptance. He begrudged his father’s joy over his brother’s safe return. He did not love his brother. He loved his own record more. He reminded his father of his brother’s sins and contrasted them with his own worth. He wants his father to compare their scores in his favor.

When we are confronted with our own shortcomings we defend ourselves by dredging up past offenses by our accuser. We have kept record of them in our memories so that we can produce them when needed. We have to feel more virtuous than others so that we can maintain our self-esteem and avoid being put at a disadvantage. So we play the game of tit for tat, exchanging accusations until we exhaust the goodwill we have for one another.

Not only is this destructive in marriages and families, but it is also devastating amongst ethnic groups and nations. Hitler and his followers resented Germany’s defeat in World War I, and the humiliating terms of the Treaty of Versailles. The memories of their losses festered until they were able to avenge themselves in the Second World War. Similarly today, the resentment of the Palestinians over the loss of their land in the wars of 1947 and 1967, feeds the hatred of Israel today. The loss of power by one ethnic group, tribe or nation, is resented by their descendants, until the opportunity comes to get even through yet another war or revolution.

We keep score because it makes us feel superior to the person or ethnic group we resent. We enjoy feeling noble and worthy as the decent person or group who was wrongly hurt. War is waged to redress grievances, and to bring those who have injured us or our countrymen to account. We want to hurt them for what they have done to us in the past.

This is the state of the world today where conflict rules. Group is warring against group because of past grievances and present resentments. Imagine if the British still nursed the grievance of losing the American colonies, and schemed to get them back? Imagine the Confederacy still wanting its independence? You can’t live in the past. Healthy people move on and make a life for themselves rather than continuing to fight their ancestor’s battles. Children move on to fulfill their own dreams rather than depending on inheriting the assets of their parents to make it easier for them. Christians who have accepted the need for their own forgiveness, don’t hold others hostage to judgment. They let the dead bury their own dead. They want nothing to do with vendettas. For our own peace of mind we have to let go of our resentment against those who have hurt us or our loved ones. Despite our painful memories we don’t want to remain hostages to the past.

Love lets the past die. Love does not seek for justice even though it is in the right. Love wants to wipe the slate clean and start all over again. What is important to love is that it is possible to make a new beginning. “Accounts may go unsettled; differences remain unsolved; ledgers stay unbalanced. Conflicts between people’s memories of how things happened are not cleared up; the past stays muddled. Only the future matters. Love’s power does not make fussy historians. Love prefers to tuck all the loose ends of past rights and wrongs in the bosom of forgiveness – and pushes us into a new start. Letting go of the past and beginning here, now, where we are, to move again toward a reconciled life is one of the hardest things any human being is ever asked to do. Love is the power to do that.” (Smedes, Love Within Limits, p.71)

“Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” (Colossians 3:13,14)

Salvation in Christ results in the healing of painful memories. It is learning to forget what other people did to us and those we love. The power to forget is the power of the Cross. Jesus said, “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Love is the power to forgive, to tear up the scorecard, to be reconciled, to leave the final accounting to the judgment and mercy of God. God settled accounts with us on the Cross. Let us leave our wrongs, our resentments, our grudges at the foot of the Cross of Christ. The love of God in Christ conquers all. The Gospel is God’s answer to the ills of the world.

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

""The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction." Proverbs 1:7

"A fools mouth is his destruction and his lips are the snare of his soul."Proverbs 18:7

"The fear of the Lord is to hate evil, pride, arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth do i hate." Proverbs 8:13

"The fear of the Lord prolongeth days, but the years of the wicked shall be shortened." Proverbs 10:27

"The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death." Proverbs 14:27

"The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom and before honour is humility." Proverbs 15:33

"The fear of the Lord tendeth to life and he that hath it shall abide satisfied, he shall not be visited with evil." Proverbs 19:23

"Every word of God is pure, he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him." Proverbs 30:5

"Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord pondereth the hearts." Proverbs 21:2

"There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." Proverbs 16:25

"There is no fear of God before their eyes." Romans 3:18

The Fear of God...the moral dread of being displeasing unto God. If we had a gut wrenching pit of the stomach dread, of being displeasing unto God, our creator, who made heaven and earth, all that is seen and unseen, our Father in heaven, then it would be easy to walk in righteous repentance each moment of each day...we would weep over our sin, over the lost, over nations. We would pray without ceasing. We would have joy and peace in the trial and fire we face in this short life we live here. Thank you God, for the fear of God in my heart.

The sad truth is that most people will perish and spend eternity separated from God, even though his heart's desire is that none should perish and all come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9), that he is long-suffering toward us. Sadly, even the brethren bicker and fight, find fault and accuse. If we do not know the fear of the Lord, the godly sorrow that sin convicts us to in our hearts, the agony and sorrow of sinning against God, the confession and forgiveness of sin...how can we preach it? How can we preach repentance if we have not experienced our own Godly sorrow for our sins?

i thank God that he loved me so much he sent His Son to shed his blood and reconcile me to himself. The Cross changed everything in my life. i thank God he has broken my heart and my life for himself. i thank God he has put people like Pastor Troy in my life who have lead me deeper into God's word, that i may abide always in Jesus. God's Word i have hid it in my heart, and keeps me ready wherever i am to preach repentance. i now and forever abide in the presence of Christ, and each day i am ready for each encounter with the lost. i am truly blessed and find all my strength, my joy, my peace, and all my answers in God. i praise God for all i am and ever will be. i praise God who is and who was and who ever shall be. i praise God. Lord i ask that you keep me focused on you, give me strength to pray, fast, read your word, preach repentance to the lost, for as long as you allow me to live on this planet. Let me not be displeasing unto you. Thank you Lord..i love you..all glory be to you forever and ever, amen.

The truth is that God is no respecter of persons, what he does for one he will do for another (Acts 10:34). We each have equal opportunity to live in Him. The playing field is level. The choice is ours.

OUR WORLD

Imagine a place where policy or practice prevents Christians from obtaining Bibles or other Christian literature. Where government sanctioned circumstances or anti-Christian laws lead to Christians being harassed, imprisoned, killed or deprived of possessions or liberties because of their witness...Belarus, Mauritania, Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Somalia, Comoros, Syria, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Bhutan, China, Burma, Laos, Malaysia, Cuba, Maldives....OUR WORLD...

How about where governments try to provide protection for Christians, but Christians are victims of violence or death because of their witness...Indonesia, India, Mindanao, Bangladesh, Turkey, Ethiopia, Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, West Bank, Northern Nigeria...OUR WORLD.

What of America? What is our path?

Every year the list increases. Every day all around the world, brothers and sisters, young and old, are dying for their faith, for lifting up the Gospel of Christ, for taking up their cross. Every day. We here in America sit comfy and cosy in our "safe" place, taking for granted our faith as America slips farther and farther from the truth of God and is being made over into a Godless nation. i urge each Christian to bring Jesus to every area of our lives, beginning with our families. Speak Godly things at home and bring them to work, play, church, wherever you go. Our conversations must be seasoned with the Word of God, with holiness and righteousness and prayer. Time is short, pray and preach hard..Jesus is coming... amen.

THE WAR FOR YOUR SOUL IS REAL

"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." Ephesians 6:12

REPENT AND BELIEVE ON JESUS

"How art thou fallen from heaven O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground which didst weaken the nations. For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven i will exalt my throne above the stars of God, i will sit also upon the mount of the congregation in the sides of the north. i will ascend above the heights of the clouds, i will be like the most high. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit." Isaiah 14:12-15

Those who are in rebellion against God, upon whom God's judgment is laid, face the same fate at Lucifer the fallen angel of God. An eternity in the pit of Hell, an eternity separated from God, an eternity in torment and torture. Hell is not a party and Satan is no party host, he will be in the pit just like the rest of the sinners who refuse to repent continually...Same Hell....REVELATION 20:15

Each time we choose the world, ourselves and our lusts before God, we come closer to this fate...

"Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world passeth away and the lust thereof, but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever." 1 John 2:15-17

Choose God and his will for your life, choose to pray, fast, read the word and do the work of the ministry of reconciliation...Choose an eternity with the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, amen... Choose this day whom you will serve...amen

REPENT

From John the Baptist, heralding in the reign of Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.

"And saying, Repent ye for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." Matthew 3:2

To Jesus himself preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God.

"And saying, The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand, Repent ye and believe the gospel." Mark 1:15

To the Apostles preaching in spirit and truth, after Jesus earthly time is over.

"Then Peter said unto them, Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." Acts 2:38 "Repent ye therefore and be converted that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord." Acts 3:19

And Paul, being held by Roman authorities, preaching to King Agrippa before being sent to Caesar.

"But shewed first unto them of Damascus and at Jerusalem and throughout all the coasts of Judaea and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God and do works meet for repentance." Acts 26:20

Enter in the modern day Gentile Christian, who has trouble bringing God into the every day actions of their lives and speech, much less if they would be put in prison. Christians who live their lives as though there are no consequences for their actions against the holiness and righteousness of God. Christians in name only.

We recently heard two powerful messages. One about being the Product of your Environment, and one on Unity. Both messages tie together and affect the walk of a Christian. Both messages tie directly to Repentance and the Cross of Christ.

In Acts 26:20 when Paul says "turn to God and do works meet for repentance", he is saying, do those things that prove you have turned to God and have changed the way you think and act.

What does a typical day look like in our lives? In the life God gave us, and as Christians, the life that has been reconciled to Him for His glory. Are we glorifying him with our mouths, our actions, our dress, our attitude, our thoughts? Are we really? Is our environment one of holiness, righteousness, love and forgiveness? Is there unity in our body of believers? Do we lift each other up, edifying and strengthening one another, speaking of Him and his Scripture and his will in our lives? Speaking of the grace and mercy of God that has allowed us to reach that one lost soul today? Or is the topic of conversation about the last TV episode of something or sports event, or movie? Or is it about relationships, the latest dirt dished out on someone?

Before you jump up and down and say blah blah blah blah blah, i am not saying that all conversation about anything other than God is a sin. i am saying that if this is all we have to talk about all day, then we had better check our relationship with God, and we had better hurry. Time is short and there is an urgency to reach the lost. So if we are not sharing Jesus every day, something is not right, and that something is not God. That something is us, choosing to be in the wrong places without the mind of Christ, and in disunity with God and the body.

i believe that if we are in the will of God as we should be, if we are living, moving and having our being in Him, then our job was picked by him for a reason, our friends , our family, our neighbors, our daily routine is all about His will in our lives. Each step, each breath is for Him. Each word, each action is for Him. As little as it seems to us, it is all seen and heard by a holy and righteous God who loves us. Do we love him or the world? We all better check ourselves, right down to the last micro speck of our hearts and lives. Because God's will, is our will, or it should be if we are in him. Each moment of our lives we choose to serve God or the Devil..can't serve both.

"For in him we live and move and have our being, as certain also of your own poets have said, for we are also his offspring." Acts 17:28

Sin is the most dis-unifying and separating thing in a persons life. Sin, since the fall of man, the rebellion of Adam and Eve is what separates us from God. Sin is why we needed Jesus to reconcile us to God in the first place and why we need him everyday. Sin is why we need to pick up our cross daily and follow Jesus. To go through the daily cleansing of the refiners fire. To be built up in the character of God.

Paul..in prison in Rome...

"i therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worth of the vocation wherewith ye are called. With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love. Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit even as ye are called in one hope of your calling." Ephesians 4:1-4

God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. One God, three persons. Each one equal in the full power and majesty of the Godhead. God, all power and glory and majesty be unto Him, amen. God sent his son in fulfillment of OT prophesy, God in the flesh, to shed blood for us and reconcile us to himself (Romans 5:10). Jesus left the Holy Ghost to lead us to all truth(John 16:13) and fill us with the strength and power to follow Him (Acts 1:8). To avoid temptation
(1 Corinthians 10:13), to be holy as he is holy (1 Peter 1:16), and righteous as he is righteous (1 John 3:7). To lift up the name of Jesus (John 12:32) by preaching the Gospel
(1 Corinthians 1:18,21) , and draw all men to him in godly sorrow to repentance and salvation of their souls (2 Corinthians 7:9-10). God's grace and mercy unto salvation in our lives must be shared with others.

i believe that the Holy Ghost is the glue that holds the body together. He moves in us all to push us on to do the will of the Father in our lives. When we are moving in Him we are in unity with God and each other. We hear God clearly and no matter the trial, we persevere and know God is with us. When we are in sin there is disunity and God is grieved and the body suffers. Our actions are not done in a vacuum, we affect each other. i know God's will, will be done with or without us. If we choose sin, God will choose another to do what needs doing for Him. But what of the sinner? We have a responsibility in the body to bring restoration to that sinner, to bring reconciliation to that soul unto God and unto the body. We at least must try.

"But the hour cometh and now is when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is Spirit and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and turth." John 4:23-24
The time is now and is past time when we should all be worshipping God in spirit and truth. This means with our whole lives, every part of them. Each little nook and cranny we are holding onto that is not of God needs to be cast out into the fire. Making our environment one of Gods's choosing and being unified in his Spirit within the body. Are we practicing love as
1 Corinthians 13 says to, each word of it? Are we practicing each fruit of the Spirit like Galatians 5:22 commands? Are we being built up in our Godly character so fast that people are taken aback and think you are arrogant, self-righteous, hateful, bigotted, judgmental? Because, that is how they will view you when you take the world to task for the sin it is in. The world and Satan who runs it will want you to conform, to just give in a little to fit in. Here in lies the trap of the Devil. DO NOT give in a bit. Stick to the Word of God and his will for your life. Satan can be subtle...he is ever looking for hearts to devour.

"Be sober, be vigilant because your adversary the devil as a roaring lion walketh about seeking whom he may devour." 1 Peter 5:8
i wrote a while back on debt. This is a prevailing sin among the worldly and believers alike. One i am familiar with. God convicted me of this sin and i have repented, and am making amends, restitution, to those i owe. My sin was against God for not trusting him with my need, and against the lenders. Even though i have repented and God abundantly blesses my life, i still live with the consequences of it. i still must pay it off until God says it is enough. If i do not, i am a thief and a liar and i can repent till the cows come home but why would God listen to me? Do not let Satan fool you. It is not ok to walk away from debt, it is sin. Failure to pay is stealing and lying. If God was still feared in this country, there would be debters prisons. But the debtor or sinner, gets away scott free and the lender suffers. Is that Godly? No it is not. When we borrow money to satisfy a covetous want, which many can justify by calling it ministry, we are saying we do not trust God for our every need. We do not believe Matthew 6:33. We are taking the scripures we want to justfy our sin and disregarding the rest. We are sinners, and this is a great cause of disunity within the body today all over America. This will keep the true body from growing and bearing fruit as fast as anything.

Owe no man anything (Romans 13;8-10) but the debt to love them as Jesus loved them... Repent, believe on Jesus and follow him. Pray and read his Word daily, schedule fast days, pick up the cross daily, build up your holy and righteous Godly character, fill your heart with him alone and let it overflow to others.

"For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herin thou hast done foolishly therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars." 2 Chronicles 16:9

So do we want to continue to war against the flesh, the world, the sinful nature? Or do we want to claim and walk and live in Jesus, and the power of the Holy Spirit he so lovingly promised us?? The choice is ours.

"For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator." Hebrews 9:16 yes and amen!

WHO IS OUR ENEMY

Who is our enemy? Is it the God hater? Is it the backslider, the atheist, the agnostic, the Jew, the Muslim, the Greek? Who is it? The "Christian" who looks like the world? Who is it and what does God say about them?

ENEMY in the OT Hebrew is oyeb. Refers to both individuals and nations (Genesis 22:17, Exodus 23:4) or enemy of God (Naham 1:2). Tsar means adversary, enemy, foe, a general designation for enemy. Or to twist it around, the Lord may also be the enemy of His sinful people as His judgment comes upon them (Deuteronomy 32:41-43, Lamentations 2:4). The word tsar has several synonyms: hater, persecutor, tyrant, oppressor.

In the NT it is echthros, an adjective, primarily denoting, hated or hateful. In the active sense, hating, hostile. A professing believer who would be a friend of the world thus making himself an enemy of God (James 4:4), men who are opposed to Christ (Matthew 13:25, 28, 22:44, Mark 12:36...etc..), or to his servants (Revelation 11:5). One who is opposed to righteousness (Acts 13:10). One who is unregenerate in their attitude toward God (Romans 5:10, Colossians 1:21)...the list goes on...

Is an enemy of God one who professes Christianity and does not hold to the precepts and doctrine of Jesus? One who professes with their lips that the end days are near but lives and acts like the world? One who says they love God more than anything but their life is lived in direct contradiction to His word? No trust, no faith, no obedience, no holiness, no righteousness. Taking the Word of God out of context to fit their sin and justify it. Trying every worldly thing to solve life's problems before going to God, when God should be sought FIRST in ALL THINGS, even the littlest thing (Matthew 6:33).

So many believers walk around with a cloud over them, a depressed spirit, a spirit of bondage. It is so sad to see. What is that? It is the enemy of our souls wining his battle for theirs. It is the believer not going to God with ALL things. Believers should have joy and love more often than not, despite and because of their circumstances. If believers let worldly circumstances take their joy, then they are not praying, fasting, reading the word and doing the work of the ministry enough. They just are not. i have been around many years and i know our God. The Spirit of God living in me leads me to life, to refreshing by peaceful waters, to strength, to joy, to the very throne room of God, regardless of my circumstances. Am i perfect, not by a long shot, only by the precious shed blood of the Lamb of God am i perfect in Gods eyes as i walk in righteous repentance each moment. Am i never sad, no i get sad, but my God is bigger than my sadness and when i bring it to Him, i am filled with joy. Am i never tested, frustrated, challenged, no these things come and pass as quickly as i offer them to God and He gives me the answer, the peace and the strength to move past it. God is the answer to ALL this worldly life's problems, challenges, and sins. A believer must set the Godly example in all areas of his life for the lost world and professed Christians to see. It is not a competition, it is a life or death race to eternity. We hold our hand out to our enemies in love with the words of Christ, words that have the power of life and death, and they are faced with a choice that will determine where they spend eternity. We offer the enemy the love of God. We offer them reconciliation to God, through the precious shed blood of the Lamb of God who is Jesus Christ, who is God.

i could quote scripture after scripture about what God says about our responsibilities to our homes, families, children, jobs, finances, the church, the lost, the body, each other, and on and on. But if God is not the first priority in a souls life, when one wakes, sleeps, and every waking moment, if God is not living in our lives and our heart is hard, then until the Fear of God (Romans 3:18) brings one to godly sorrow and repentance (2 Corinthians 7:9-10), where God forgives sin (1 John 1:9) and one is born again, a new creature in Him(2 Corinthians 5:17-21). Where one knows that the sin they sin is against a holy and righteous God and him alone, and feels the sorrow of displeasing him, this conviction which leads to godly sorrow, to the moral dread of displeasing God again, to a new life in God, to new thinking, to obedience and freedom from bondage. Until then, they are lost in the world or their own hard heart. The cross changes everything...he left his place on high to come for sinful men to die...see it, believe it, live it.

For me, the professed Christian who pays God lip service but their heart is far from him, these are the greatest distraction because they know, they know what God says and they twist it around and take it out of context to justify the worldly life they lead. To justify the mood, the disobedience, the unholiness and unrighteousness in whatever area of their life they will not give wholly over to God. Sad.

God saved us and sanctified us, set us apart, by the precious shed blood of His Son Jesus Christ for His purpose and His will in this life. Not our will be done, but God's perfect will be done on earth as it is in heaven..amen.

Love and pray for your enemies...but do not be distracted by them. Offer them the saving blood of Jesus, if they reject it shake the dust off and move on....time is short and the urgency of the hour is upon us.

My Saviour loves, my Saviour lives, my Saviour is always there for me..
My God He was, My God He is, My He's always gonna be...amen, amen and amen.

Who is your God and Saviour...?
